Lietuvių kalba | Lithuanian Conversation Thread

Labas visiems! Aš mokausi lietuvių kalbą universitete! Aš visada norėjau mokytis kažkokią baltišką kalbą ir pasirinkau lietuvių kalbą, todėl kad aš jau žinojau daug apie latvių kalbą. Aš taip pat manau, kad latviškai lengviau mokytis ir kalbėti. Ar yra žmonės čia, kurie taip pat mokosi lietuviškai? ...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

I've been reading about Tok Pisin and I fell in love, and I was inspired to work on my own little English creole-like project. It has lots of non-creole-like features, like applicatives, case, split-ergativity, and some fairly well-developed morphology in general. Here's the original: Adadat temmosp...

Re: Ko:q Qləqo: - A Romp into Isolating Stuff and Transparen

12b. Noun Class: Agreement and Agency Stuff Remember that time I said that noun class wasn't very important? Well, turns out it's quite freaking important. Noun class is important for adjectives, stative verbs, and transitive verbs. Adjectives and stative verbs function quite similarly (in fact, th...

long time no post 13a. A Discussion of Nominal Categories (and more I guess): Compounding While in an above post I stated that I would start with a post about a concept I dubbed “neocompounding”, I realized that it wouldn’t do to talk about that without going over why it’s neo compounding and how th...

Re: Language practice thread

It's Umbrian. Only the Umbrians write <faamahu> for <fāmahu>. And I said that Proto-Umbric descends from Proto-Avestic, which is a parody of PIE (with a priori words). Kas ir "indoeiropeišu pirmvalodas parodija"? Kur joks ir? What is a "parody of PIE"? Where is the joke?

Re: Other Creativity

I suddenly had a random urge to write something. I don't know if I'll finish it, but here it is: "Change of plans, we're turning left." "But the restaurant is that way!" I said, pointing right. The taxi driver glanced at his mirror. Immediately he stepped on the gas, and we must...

Re: Gaku-speaking leopards!

I wasn't expecting Gaku to be spoken by leopards. Does construction of new spaceships happen often? When it does, how does it work? Where does it happen? What are the legal bindings - if any - associated with it? Also - is there one big Gaku flotilla, or do the Gaku travel in separate groups? How ma...

There are two common Russian variants to this phrase:

Как будет это по-русски?
how will-be that.NOM in-Russian

Как это сказать по-русски?
how that.ACC speak.INF in-Russian

Re: Telset

You could also posit a phonemic analysis that analyzes phonemes as strings of binary signals. But that would be about as helpful as an analysis, since dismissing phonemic structure as "basically abstract" gives you so much leeway that you might as well not bother with it anymore.

Re: Help me to make a better Resources Thread!

I think having all of the Wikipedia links is unnecessary. The whole point of the thread is to make it easier to access various materials that may or may not be tricky to find; nothing can be less tricky than looking up something in Wikipedia. But that's an essentially minor quip; I'm just against fl...

I'm thinking of improving upon the existing Unilang lessons (fixing mistakes, going into more linguistic detail) for Ainu as well as gearing it up for a more linguistics-oriented audience. Any takers?

Re: Kaynur Art!

Some mythological bullcrap. The Earthly Reindeer is actually a wolf-reindeer mix (which isn't exactly obvious, but in Kaynur style the shape of the head is more wolf-like than reindeer-like, plus the blood coming out of the teeth is more alluding to the wolf's carnivorous nature). Legends say that t...
