Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

In a language with a phonetic inventory of [m m̥ n n̥ t tʰ k kʰ s h l l̥ r r̥ j j̥ w w̥] in which all sequences are phonetically CV, is it more appropriate to analyze a sequence such as [m̥a] as /m̥a/ or /mha/? Perhaps more to the root of my question is: must a language have clusters of some consona...

Re: How Do YOU Create Words?

(I'm not sure you can do the same thing for syllable structure, though). Because of the nesting nature of Awkwords, you could simply set aside a seperate category for your different syllable shapes, then assign weights to those. One thing about this question, of which it seems I'm doomed to never g...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

So I'm working out a lang and I need to know what's the nicest way to adapt incoming /f/. It can't be /f/ unchanged. The three options are /p/, /pʰ/ and /h/. For extra credit explain your choice. Depends on what you means by "nice." If we're talking about which phone would "sound nic...

I don't understand what you're getting at anymore. Sure a deaf person could write you a letter, because they comprehend the language. Being able to write doesn't always equate to understanding the language, however.

Lol Get your head out of your ass. I clearly meant having the capacity to use the writing system. I don't know how I could've made that more clear.

Re: Concise grammar documents?

In the previous thread, where I provided the grammar pile, I also provided the Wikipedia articles on Hebrew and Arabic. Are these not concise enough? FWIW, Wikipedia has more grammars than just those. Grammars of specific languages

Re: A type of Conlang I could not find any information about

If they are able to write they hsould be able to read. Reading lips is a seperate thing altogether. Sure. All I was saying is that bilingualism is about comprehension. You need to be capable of holding a conversation with another person. I can read German... But my comprehension is minimal, as such...

Re: A type of Conlang I could not find any information about

To be bilingual in both English and ASL, you must be able to speak English and sign ASL. It isn't about reading/writing. I can read and write Hebrew, but I don't understand a lick of it. Edit: I suppose in the case of mute individuals, speaking may not be the best criteria. The key, though, is compr...

Re: Resources for learning Semitic natlangs?

When I say "a fare bit of background knowledge", I really just mean a somewhat rudimentary understanding of the language and culture. I'm not an expert in the language by any means, but I can read and write fluently. It's nowhere near the level of having an understanding of its historical ...

Re: Resources for learning Semitic natlangs?

I'm not sure what the best book is, but I've used this . Although it was supposed to be used as supplemental material for class, our teacher never really interacted with us, so I found it to be quite useful and informative. Though, I'd been going to Hebrew school for the majority of my educational c...

Re: How do I make a detailed conlang?

I'd start by perusing through the online version of the Language Construction Kit if you haven't already. In fact, if you have the money, I'd recommend buying all of Mark's books: The LCK , The ALCK (Advanced LCK) , The Conlanger's Lexipedia , and even The Planet Constuction Kit once you get through...

Re: Language Aesthetics

David J. Peterson talks about this very briefly in his interview on the Daily Show: Video Clip @ about 5:05, Noah asks, "what would the sexiest language be?" David responds by suggesting that there isn't anything inherent about a language that makes it sound sexy. It's all about a speakers...

Derp. So, the other way around. Don't omit the object. Or reintroduce it in this case if you're intent on having omitted objects in certain situations.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

That's not even necessary, the first 'solution' that comes to my mind is to have different words for modifier vs. noun 'this' (and, by extension, 'that' and whatever others deictics you feel like having). Japanese for instance: これは二つ要る kore wa futatsu iru This needs two この二つは要る kono futatsu wa iru ...

Aha! I didn't consider how the overlaying worked in typewriters. That seems quite reasonable then. Thanks for the response.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I recently became aware of the Saanich Writing System and was wondering if anyone had any information as to the rationale behind the use of only majuscule letters?
