Re: Torn
What has happened to this?? I haven’t posted anything in ages … Here is a bit on the CURRENCY OF TORN. Money (New Qorbenish “ giqyi ”) is the main thing people use to buy things. There are two *main* types of money in common circulation: Old Age Money (OAM) and New(ish) Money. OLD AGE MONEY Old Age ...

Blaqball (sport)
Blaqball is the national sport of Torn. Developed in the Victorian Era, every city has its own frenuously supported blaqball team and it is also popular in the glamour schools, where it is compulsory for male students from 9am to 3:30pm every Sarthday. Pitch The blaqball pitch (pictured) is half a m...
Salaxın
PHONOLOGY AND ORTHOGRAPHY Salaxın (language of Asalax) is written in a gothic script. The orthography is actually very regular and predictable, but the rules are complex. This is because earlier versions of the orthography were quite variable and the standard version aims to introduce regularity wh...

Re: The Conculture/Conpeople Opinions Thread
Next question: Does your conworld have eclipses (annular or total), and if so, what do the people think about them? For the people of Torn, the Moon symbolises Femininity and the Sun Masculinity. Torn is a heavily masculine society and so the Moon is looked upon with great suspicion. Things were no...

Re: Government
The supreme ruler of Torn is a dictator called the Brenhyn. Here is what the Encyclopaedia Rupticus has to say about him: "The Brenhyn , the Bear, the Swordrent - the Chosen High Lord of Torn who went away across the waters into the Cloud but came again to rule and guide us, the greatest and on...

I also would love to find a truly good book or website for really getting into the head of Greek/Roman polytheism, or even possibly Hinduism (though I don't know much about it at all). That would give me a good touchpoint, instead of the bland, repeated, and oft-copied webpages that don't really wo...

Re: How to constrain the use of attack magic among civilians
I think that would be enough. And good law enforcement and moral convinctions. After all, it's easy in the real world to stab someone with a kitchen knife, but most people still don't do it.

Re: Does anybody else get bored of conworlds easily?
I can only offer a suggestion, and that is to keep your work on all these worlds someplace. Like in discrete folders or wikis or whatever. So, when you get tired of chaos and disorder, perhaps you'll find yourself drawn back to flying vampires! Then, just go back into that folder and continue where...

Does anybody else get bored of conworlds easily?
Is it just me or does anybody else find it hard to focus on one world for two long?? I seem to have had loads of worlds over the years but I always get fed up after a while and move on to something else. Sometimes after a few years, sometimes after just a few weeks or even days. Is this normal? It's...

Re: Torn
hisory of torn It has been accepted for a long time (though naturally nobody agrees how long) that the history of Torn cannot be described in terms of a single linear timeline. Various more complex theories have been proposed over the sunths, (e.g.) Warhammer’s Thirteen Strands Theory or even Pseud...

Re: Torn
Thanks for all the comments! Sex is banned How is the next generation generated? women are treated as second-class citizens. People speak a horribly distorted version of what was once English, with bits of other languages mixed in haphazardly. Sounds a bit like modern Britain, especially 1950's-era ...

Torn
Torn: the basics Torn (the setting of my WIP novel The Qorbenic Programme ) is basically Great Britain in an alternate reality, created by something called the "Qorbenic Programme" which totally rearranged history, geography and physics. (The truth of the Qorbenic Programme is known to ve...

.... New here but not a new conlanger .... Can you tell us a bit about some of your conlangs, conworlds, concultures, and conpeoples? Maybe some links to the threads where you've posted some of that? Yes, I will! I just need some time to type things up into a readable form. Thanks for your interest!

Thanks for so many warm welcomes! New here but not a new conlanger. [:)] Not sure I'm any good at it though. Particularly interested in the languages of mediaeval western Europe. Also into sci-fi and fantasy of all varities. Trying to write a novel (aren't we all?), so currently working on a world a...

Re: Greek for Cherubim?
The English pronunciation might even be a spelling pronunciation. I don't know. Loads of other languages seem to have /k/. /k/ in Latin would have regularly given /s/ before /e/ in French, not /ʧ/. Does anybody know how it is actually pronounced in French? It is spelled with ch but that is sometimes...

Re: Post-Modern English
Irregularity might not get lost. Of course some irregular forms will disappear. But maybe new ones will arise. Consider especially the impact of future sound changes that might feed irregulairty. We don't know what they will be. And maybe there will be new morphology. Perhaps some auxiliaries will b...
