Re: Commonthroat: a language that only a dog could probably pronounce
rBC /chuff, long low strengthening whine/ Verb To expect a negative outcome, to fear, to suspect This one's a hard one to translate. "to fear" comes sort of close, as in "If his performance doesn't improve I fear he will lose his job." However <rBC> isn't so high on the arousal a...

Table Manners, Part 1
This is a continuation of the story from the analysis swap game over on the conlangs board. People stopped engaging with that, but I wanted to keep the story going, with a change in perspective to make it a bit more readable. Enjoy! [hr] For a few seconds I waver between turning right to head home o...

Re: Weird suprasegmental/pitch accent system
If every word has one syllable with the vowel pronounced longer than the rest, incidentally, we call this "stress", rather than "length". It's normally also pronounced a little louder and can have a different pitch from the other syllables. I was unsure whether to describe this ...

Re: Weird suprasegmental/pitch accent system
Also, how will coda /n/ and /s/ be marked in the syllabary? The system is similar to my Commonthroat braille system, which in tern is inspired by Japanese braille. The six dots of a braille cell are numbered as follows: 1 . . 4 2 . . 5 3 . . 6 Dots 1, 2, and 4 indicate vowels. o o o . . . Dots 2, 3...

Re: Weird suprasegmental/pitch accent system
Braille is very aesthetic, but it's designed to be felt with the hands rather than seen with the eyes. As a visual writing system it's horrible because everything looks too similar to everything else. Indeed. The usual way to fix this issue is to have shadow dots on the print representation of the ...

Weird suprasegmental/pitch accent system
I'm not good at pronouncing and distinguishing long vowels, as well as register tones. Here's a system that I think I might actually be able to pronounce. Each multisyllabic word has one "marked" syllable. That marked syllable is pronounced longer than the rest. The marked syllable can be ...

Overhauling sensory vocabulary
I may eventually overhaul the vocabulary used to describe physical sensations, particularly odor and color. This is in light of the research I've been doing into how human language encodes odors, as well as a desire to make the language more lore-accurate, especially where color is concerned. I'm no...

Re: The Lonely Galaxy Megathread (comments encouraged)
I found the perspective and descriptions very compelling - I think that this is your best story piece yet, and my favorite so far. (Until now, my favorite was the very first one, with the conversation between the human priest and the yinrih caretaker.) Good job! Thanks, as always! I'm not entirely ...

First Contact, Part I
The golden rays of the westering sun soak into my fur, and I feel the warm sand under my palms erode as gentle waves lap at my paws. "How long have I been standing here?" I wonder. A whisper responds, "It doesn't matter. There is no before, no after. There is only now." "Whe...
Re: Hvednakpa
I would attempt to include, like, a picture of how this time thing would word. Inspired by a picture from the Nativlang video, but I don't know how to add pictures from my computer into posts. The image tag-thing seems to want a url, or other link, for the image. You'll need to use a 3rd party imag...

New numbers station
Well, at least it was new to me. An American male voice was reciting random letters in the phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, etc, yeah it's confusing being a ham and a language nerd at the same time. Sometimes it's even called the International Phonetic Alphabet .) Anyway, I didn't catch the...

More on the Knights of the Sun
https://i.imgur.com/NMISoyy.png Here's a symbol for the Knights of the Sun. It plays on the Claravian Star and Gear. The spikes represent both sun rays and a spiked tail weapon, which as stated in the Commonthroat thread, has similar symbolic value to yinrih as swords do for humans. Hearthside's mi...

Encoding Olfaction
I posted a similar treatment over on the Commonthroat thread , but I've found at least one popular article treating the subject of abstract olfactory terms that sheds a bit more light on the subject. Basically, conventional linguistic wisdom says that human language is incapable of encoding odors in...

Tailslengths and heartbeats
The standard unit of length at Focus is the Tailslength or just tail which, while long since redefined in terms of physical constants, is meant to approximate the length of an adult yinrih's tail. The standard unit of time in scientific circles doesn't mesh neatly into the Yih calendar as the SI sec...

Re: Calendars (for Earth and for conworlds)
Very well thought-out. I don't have much laid out for Focus, other than a rudimentary calendar for Yih that reckons years from the Kindling of the Fire of Understanding (the emergence of sapience). Yih years are about 1.4 Earth years long, and there are exactly 528 Yih days per Yih year, making a Yi...

Re: Hvednakpa
This is a much more clever way to go about it that I did with Commonthroat, where I just use time adverbs for tense and serial verbs like "start", "stop" etc for aspect.
How would you talk about future events? Perhaps a verb meaning to want or to intend.

At first he hobbles along a ways behind you, but he slowly adjusts to his MacGyvered paw coverings and begins trotting along next to you as before. You make a mental note to buy a jar of Musher's Secret when you two get back home. Perhaps he'll tolerate paw wax more than those socks and mittens. Eve...
