Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences
Portuguese(/Iberian and Neapolitan) o ' DEF.ART.MASC ' and Romanian o ' INDF.ART.FEM ' have been causing me some annoyance recently... I see a sequence like Rom. o casă 'a house' and I immediately want to parse it as definite. By extension I guess Portuguese a ' DEF.ART.FEM ' also adds to this, beca...

Re: The Sixth Conversation Thread
Do you feel better about it that your cat passed naturally instead of being euthanized? I know I would. That's easy to say until your pet is terminally ill and suffering horribly. I wouldn't presume one way or the other, but perhaps he hás been through it? His post in reply to sangi having to put h...

Re: Conlang word easter eggs?
It's funny because I was just about to merge these two old threads when one of them was suddenly revived..! I was about to suggest also merging the newest word thread, since the Easter egg back story was what I was aiming for. I didn't know either that this phenomenon was called an Easter egg. I th...

I've split this topic, as it had reached over 200 pages. If anyone who's been playing would like to sum up the rules you've been going with, I'll add them to the OP.

Re: Conlang word easter eggs?
There are some good examples in this thread: https://cbbforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7164 I couldn't think of what to call this phenomenon when I posted that thread, but "Easter eggs" is a good term. It's funny because I was just about to merge these two old threads when one of them ...

I'm genuinely sorry for your loss, Salmoneus. I hardly want to imagine how it feels to lose your cat after so many years together. Of course you are sad about it. I'm glad to hear that she went peacefully after a long and (I assume) comfortable life.

Today I learned the English word belly flop. Is this the general word across varieties or are there synonyms that are more common regionally?

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences
Where does 'ni' come from!? It comes from -en I , where the consonant of the verb ending has been reanalyzed onto the pronoun. I comes from older īʀ . The verbal ending is from Old Swedish -in and of unclear origin (West Norse has expected -ið ), but possible related to the 3p subjunctive. On a rel...

I'm sorry that I didn't notice this thread earlier, because I think there are some unacceptable comments here made by Salmoneus (e.g. "[your post is] actively disgusting") and Khemehekis ("Seems like the Dunning-Kruger effect to me."), directed at a new member (who unsurprisingl...

Re: What are you listening to/watching?
I've been watching the second season of the HBO show L'amica geniale (My Brilliant Friend), based on the novels by Elena Ferrante. It's a really great story, but also fascinating due to most of the dialog being in Neapolitan, rather than Italian. I'm told it's common for Italian shows to feature the...

Cette nuit j'ai pas pu dormir parce que j'essayais de créer de nouveaux changements vocaliques pour le silvais. Maintenant je réalise une visualisation animée des changements dans Keynote (la version Apple de Powerpoint). I couldn't sleep last night because I was trying to come up with new vowel sh...

Another question, now that's been broached a couple times, is one I've often wondered: how much dóes it actually cost to keep CBB afloat, Olympicwise or Titanicwise, and, currently, who's paying for it? And would you ever consider allowing those members that wish to, to share that burden? Also, hav...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences
A false friend that has been causing me some trouble: In (written) Finnish, the 123 singular pronouns start with m~s~h. In the related North Sami, they start with m~d~s, and this change of the initial s- is really throwing me off. Cf. Finnish s(in)ä , s(in)ut 'you-NOM, you-ACK' with North Sami son ,...

Swedish is full of such high/front-back/low pairs as well. Some off the top of my head:
ditt och datt 'this and that, odds and ends (with the back vowel first!)'
krimskrams 'rubbish, novelties, knick-knacks'
hipp som happ 'haphazardly, at random, willy-nilly'

It depends .... I like the term "Pacific Rim" but that also includes the whole west coast of the Americas too. If I was writing about an alt-history, I would probably just say "Pacific" and leave it at that ... context will indicate that Im not talking about California, Chile, e...
