Re: False cognates

How about English "give" and Mandarin "gěi" (traditional 給, simplified 给)?

Re: Guess The Language!!!

I'm going to guess that it's some sort of African language, because its orthography uses IPA letters (isn't that a more widespread thing in African languages?).

Re: 这练习中文

One big problem with that memorization method is that it doesn't always work with simplified characters (which are what I use). Take, for example, the traditional Chinese character 龜, which means turtle. This character is very easy to remember, because it closely resembles a turtle (in fact, the way...

Re: 这练习中文

I, too, agree that Pinyin is usually a much better choice than IPA when it comes to Chinese. Besides being designed for the language and therefore more convenient in this case, most of the characters are readily available on a regular Latin-alphabet keyboard, and those that aren't can be swapped for...

Re: How important is plausibility?

I thought he sad, how plausible the features would be in a natlang. So I took this for naturalism. I'm sorry of I was wrong. That's what I originally meant, actually, but I've now decided that I'm not going to worry so much about naturalism in my conlang. This is the phoneme inventory I've decided ...

Re: How important is plausibility?

I would really only worry about plausibility if I were trying to dupe a panel of linguists. If I were being paid for the work, or if I were trying to be very carefuly, I'd be moer conscious of plausibility. But anything less than that I wouldn't worry about because of ANADEW if for no other reason....

Re: Introduction thread(s)

Hello, I'm GrandPiano! I'm kind of young - only 14 years old - but I've recently found an interest in conlanging, and I'm hoping that this board can help me with that. I have a decent knowledge of phonetics/phonology from browsing Wikipedia, which has proven to be a reliable source in this area. I a...

Re: How important is plausibility?

I suppose the more I think about it, the more I'm not actually going for a very naturalistic conlang. My justification for having so many fricatives without is that the fricatives arose differently than they do in most languages. I kind of like the system I have for the fricatives, mainly because I ...

Re: How important is plausibility?

The main point of voicing syllabic fricatives is because voiced fricatives are more audible than voiceless fricatives. I think I personally want to be more on the plausible side, but I don't want to worry about it too much. While we're at it, how plausible does this sound? The stops in this conlang ...

How important is plausibility?

How important is it that features of my conlang be plausible in a natlang? I'm trying my hand at making my own conlang, and I'm not really making it for any purpose other than just for fun. Additionally: My conlang allows sonorants in the syllable nucleus. Its phoneme inventory contains voiceless fr...
