Re: Yay or Nay?

Orthography with more diacritics, or less diacritics? With more diacritics: Šapa ma hčēdit šaje, ču hapa pye-gûn uje. With less diacritics: Xapa ma hchédit/hcheedit xaje, chu hapa pye-guon uje. IPA: /ʃapa ma ɦʧe:dit ʃaʤɛ ʧu hapa pjɛ gu:ɔn uʤɛ/ Personally, I prefer digraphs over diacritics, but that...

Re: Question about affricate terminology

I'm not an expert on English phonology so I don't know. but it's different for ʤ because it's homorganic. It's the heterorganic affricates that are problematic and need special justification because they are usually treated as clusters. As I said, under some analyzes, you can argue that d͜ʒ is a si...

Re: Question about affricate terminology

Seemingly. I just don't want to be pelted with fruit if I label such combinations as affricates but maybe I am too concerned with convention. Well, labelling these as affricates should mean something in your language's phonology, e.g.: the language doesn't allow consonant clusters but allows these ...

Re: Prepositions > Postpositions and Case prefixes

Wals has a chapter on case affix position.

You could still go with a prefix case system if you wanted. It's not common compared to suffixing systems, but I personally don't think that's an issue.

(Can't answer the main question, sorry.)

Re: Yay or Nay?

A noun class system in a fantasylang that originated from protoscience and folk beliefs saying that living beings run on a sort of life energy, dividing nouns into animate and inanimate groups. Much much later, it's discovered that there are beings that run on a different type of energy. As the sema...

Re: I want to learn another language

If you ask me, being able to enjoy Japanese media that wasn't translated is pretty practical in itself. I can't really give a recommendation because I'm still unable to decide which language I want as my fourth, but what I'm trying (and failing) to do is to pick the one I like best and lea...

Re: Preventing language change

snip The thing is, new expressions and words come about in private conversations too. I coined new words with friends on the fly and while the odds of them catching on elsewhere are pretty slim, it's certainly not impossible- especially not if you have 1,000,000+ people coining words with their fri...

This is the first conscript that I have ever made, and Initially I loved it, but now I see it as a boring conscript. I could maybe change it to make it look more interesting, but at the moment all the characters just don't seem to fit together very well. maybe someday, but right now this is just an...

Re: Preventing language change

I think it would probably be useful if I outline what my con-culture is like as this is very promising information. My con-culture is based on a man-made island in the pacific ocean. It is a very large mega-city about 80-100km across and is completely urban area (grassland and plant-life is achieve...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Speaking of, I never understood the difference between 小さい and 小さな etc. Do you happen to have an explanation, maybe? It's not quite so simple to answer. Looking it up, there are evidently 8 pairs of attributive-predicative/attributive-only adjectives: 大きい ōkii / 大きな ōki na 小さい chiisai / 小さな chiisa ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I don't think I ever used /θ/ in a conlang until Nereifa (which I'm thinking of redoing too). Then again, I'm not a native speaker.
