Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Suppose you want to make three conlangs that belong to the same language family, and you have preset phonologies- two are vaguely based on Mongolian, the third on Slavic languages. How would you go about reverse engineering the sound changes from their common proto-language ancestor? In semitic, ph...

Re: Ciphers into Conlangs?

But what if you did something more radical. I'm not talking about just substituting written language characters- what if you actually used a phonetic cipher on english, then change how the grammar is arranged. Say you change word order, and/or turn prepositions into postpositions, glue particles on...

Re: Pronunciation vexation confessions.

I've been switching between /ʃ/ (English and German) and /ɕ/ (Japanese) for ages, but it only very recently occurred to me that they weren't actually the same sound. I don't know how I went this long without noticing it.

Re: A Priori Collablang

Here's my phonology suggestion: Inventory: Stops: /p t k/ Ejectives: /p' t' k'/ Fricatives: /ɸ β s ʃ ʒ h/ Nasals: /m n~ŋ/ Approximants: /l w/ Rhotics: /ɾ~r/ Stops are aspirated when word-initial and followed by a vowel and unaspirated otherwise. Vowels: /a ɑ u i~ɪ ɛ/ Diphthongs: /aj ɛj au/ Consonant...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

You could make adjective endings depend on gender, and your verbs could inflect for gendered person (2SG.MASC would be a different inflection than 2SG.NEUT, say). If you have any other non-affix particles for nouns, those could have different forms too.

Re: Pronunciation vexation confessions.

Trilled /r/. It took years of practice to be able to do it occasionally. I still can't do it consistently.

I also struggle to hear the difference between aspirated and nonaspirated consonants, and I have to pay really close attention if I want to do nonaspirated ones.

Re: Lexicon sculpting

1 While Géarthnuns, as was pointed out by Des eons ago, has its own very Englishy romanization of <ou> for [aʊ] ( born of a time, and too late to revise it now ) , I still find <i> for [aj] rather jarring. I let it in a few words up-page with " maihagagörs ", but of the fourteen possible ...

Re: Ciphers into Conlangs?

I'm... actually not sure what you mean. The macrons? No, those are long vowels. Just an aesthetic choice on my side. And no, it's a pretty agglutinative language. He means in the gloss, the practice is to separate affixes from roots/stems with hyphens, not dots. Dots are used if a meaning is fused ...

Re: Ciphers into Conlangs?

Xillia isn't on PC, though? Zestiria and Symphonia are, and Berseria will be very soon, but they didn't announce any other PC ports. Unless I somehow missed it... Sample time! Re: Ciphers into Conlangs?

Nope, sorry. The one I'm working on is Long Dau , from Tales of Xillia . Never heard of that , but I have heard of that . That is my favourite game of all time. Long Dau is a cipher spoken by a character in it. (It's identical to Melnics, a cipher used in Tales of Eternia from the same series.) As ...

Re: Ciphers into Conlangs?

I'm doing that right now, actually. I'm using a cipher to get words from English, then adapt and shorten them if the result is awkward, and then plug it into a non-English gramnar frame. (I'm doing it because I wanted said cipher to be an actual conlang rather than a cipher, and since the creators w...

Re: Syllabic /n/ (and other things) in Japanese singing

Not an expert, but syllabic n and separate vowels as opposed to diphthongs or long vowels are far more pronounced in singing than in speaking in my experience. It's particularly obvious in the -tai form. I've never heard anyone say the vowels separately in speech, but it happens all the time in sing...
