Re: Language practice thread
I live the mountain. Sois un avec la montagne. Be one with the mountain. http://www.smileys-gratuits.com/smiley-zen/zen-1.gif Yo soy la montaña. Soy tan grande y tan sedentario como ella. Ahora tráiganme un pastel grandote para que todos nosotros puedan comerlo juntos. ¡Salud! I am the mountain. I ...

I made a pizza with olives and pineapple last night. It was delicious.

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I started thinking about time metaphors in Hra'anh. Right now, I'm thinking that durations are expressed as weights; a light time would be a short time, and a heavy time would be a long time. I'm also freaking psyched about teaching Hebrew class tomorrow. As TA, I get to teach it one day a week at m...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
Well, in the last week, I figured out that in Hra'anh is a creole of Old Bosk'e and two other languages, and that the ergative case marker is actually grammaticalized from a topic marker in one of the parent languages (not Bosk'e). Also, the dialects in the North-West continuum are evolving into act...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
Didn't get jack squat down on paper, but at least I thought about noun incorporation in Łoresla. I also thought about making Aganese Elvish into a creole between Łoresla and the currently nonexistent Mengsh. But that probably won't ever happen.

Re: How do conlangers devise names for their conlangs?
For Hra'anh , I came up with the name before I came up with the language. Just as "hra'vakh" literally means, "people of the world", "hra'anh" literally means, "language of the world." For Bosk'e , I just used the demonym for its speakers as the name of the la...

Re: Weird Dream Thread
Normally I dream about things like biking through Klamath National forest from Walla Walla, WA to Portland, OR on a school-owned cruiser bike that isn't supposed to leave campus. (The weird thing is, Klamath National Forest is in the wrong part of Oregon for this to be possible.) But now I just wan...

Re: Weird Dream Thread
The dream isn't particularly weird, but I did find it strange. I went to Wal-Mart to get some donuts (they aren't the best donuts' but it's all we've got in this tiny town), and rather than getting just one or two, I got half a box. Most of them were chocolate-iced Bavarian cream-filled long johns (...

Re: Time and measurement systems
The only con-timescale I've come up with is for conversions on Hra. I haven't set the year in stone, but the planet has virtually the same rotational period as the Earth. Each day is divided into twenty hours; each hour is one hundred minutes; each minute is one hundred seconds. I even wrote a progr...

Re: Vocative Determiners?
Does 'fillo' come from 'filius'? If so, what prompted the change in meaning from 'son' to 'brother'? Ugh! Big mistake on my part! It means son or daughter, not brother! I guess I was thinking of O' Brother where art thou So a Freudian slip, one way or another. *wink wink nod nod* I really need to g...

Re: Vocative Determiners?
Ancient Greek has determiners that decline for case, number, and gender. This includes the vocative. Χαιρε, ὠ ἀδελφε! Greetings, o brother! ὀ ἀδελφος μου οἰκει ἐν ταις Ἀθηναις My brother lives in Athens. (lit. The brother of mine lives in the Athens.) German case is virtually gone on nouns, as well....

Re: Sexual Orientation in your Conculture
In the culture of the Aganese Dragons, homosexuality occurs in approximately 0.5% of the population, and it is considered an aberration. In the past, those who exhibited evidence of same-sex attraction were exiled, but after the Great Dragon Purge, which nearly wiped out the entire race, homosexual ...
