Re: How do you say "I love you" in your conlang(s)?
/ɑθɑkeilujən jɑxʲɑwu kʲɤ kʲɑwu/ /k/ and /x/ are allophonic, by the way. Since they're allophones you should only write the underlying phoneme when using "/.../", i.e. phonemic transcriptions. If you're writing the allophones the utterance should be written in square brackets [...]. (perso...

Re: How do you say "I love you" in your conlang(s)?
In the sense of being in love it'd be: Hmat k'a kyg /m˳at k'a kɨŋ/ Love I."middle" you."middle" The "middle" level or "neutral" personal pronouns are used in informal registers indicating familiarity as well as equal social status in formal registers. If a per...

Re: Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Uh, the palatal plosives merge with the velars before /i/. I take it I need to rewrite that and similar assorted rules of allophony? Maybe. All I know is that it wasn't clear to me. Others might not have had the same trouble :) I'd prefer to keep the affricates/fricatives symmetrical so no German o...

Re: Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
...I posted it on the previous page. It's more or less still accurate. And I blundered; I'm using <c> for <ts> and <č> for <tʃ>. Ah yes, I was meant to ask about that. You say "the palatal plosives are allophones of the velar plosives before, and only before, /i/". Does this mean that pal...

Re: Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I can haz feedback at least on this one orthography question? Since <c> is already reserved for /t͡ʃ/, should I be using <ç> as a a base for the palatal plosives or <ċ>? I'd say this might be better answered by seeing the rest of the phoneme inventory and possibly some hisotry behind the 'lang if a...

Re: Makurungou Alternate Earth.
Is there a particular language associated with this faith, like Hebrew to Judaism, Arabic to Islam, Old Church Slavonic to Russian Orthodox Christianity? The dispersal of the practicing population would indiatce the use of at least some traditional/liturgical language but the "practice alone&qu...

Re: A Phoneme Inventory (not a whole phonology)
I don't like plain <c> at all, really, unless I'm doing a very specific kind of conlang (read something like a Celtic inspired conlang), and with the presence of <š>, it just seems like a no brainer to do <č>. I used to have a situation like this in Nolikan: <c> for /ʧ/ and <š> for /ʃ/. I switched ...

Re: Canoe
Was going to follow the normal translation thread format (copy+paste-esque) but my conlangs don't actually have a word for "canoe" yet. I mean, I know that the source word will be "kanoa" for the sake of ease but it depends on when the word enters the language. For example, if th...

Re: A Phoneme Inventory (not a whole phonology)
I'm actually kind of ok with <č> without <c>, at least in this conlang. I think, though, that might just be the result of the presence of <š> which kind of gives <č> some kind of justification, e.g. "hacek=post-alveolar" or something. To me, having <c> and <š> kind of seems... almost a bit...

Re: New to conlanging, help appreciated
Seriously...don't obsess over one aspect of your conlang for too long...it kills everything else. I know, that's what always kills my projects of conlang: the phoneme inventory... Okay now I finished it, what should I go on now? Any links on what I need for the conlang? Well, one starting point is ...

Re: New to conlanging, help appreciated
And nice idea with the descenders, but I will keep the Uzbek barred <ғ> which looks better. Oh, I didn't mean for you to do otherwise :) Should I also add other letters for phonemes present in Kazakh,Uzbek,Tajik,Mongolian,Turkish when i'll borrow words? Or I could also adapt them with the present s...

Re: How to pronounce the palatal lateral approximant?
Well apparently the two are still distinguished in some regional varients of Spanish, Catalan and Galician although, as you and Ossicone pointed out they have basically merged into /j/ in other dialects. Hungarian used to contrast them but doesn't anymore but Italian, Scots Gaelic and Quechua do. Ap...
