A bit of free association, perhaps, but this didn't seem a [o.O] -worthy big reach to me. They "lay down" their lives for their country/sovereign. They used to form rows across a field going into battle. You could find them lined up in a trench/foxhole. They support the greater, heavier military endeavor.
