Ah, I see, it's just tradition then. Though, I actually use another convention, which is // for IPA (phonetic) and [] for romanisations (phonemic or not), as my dictionary does. Thanks for the explanation! [:D]

English is very ambiguous about that word. It could translate into Alál in many, many ways, given cultural/species differences - I picked the "desire to start a family with this individual" (the translation is admittedly crude, but also idiomatic in modern use) and "affection one feels towards hunting partners" (translated literally as the desire to fly in a particular formation alongside someone) possibilities, as I remembered the relevant lexical items offhand. My apologies for the resulting lack of tact for the first one. [:S]
