SlideWing

Post by MrKrov »

A side project to have a weekly update and no more for anti-burnout.

Foreshadowing of things (un)Stevenly:
- V2
- actual multiple declension patterns
- nonpredictable stem alternations
- vowel length without perfect long-short symmetry or a real tense-lax opposition
- nonnominative-accusative alignment
- distance and spatial orientation-focus

I might break out a tailor-made version of my logography for this.

So I totally dropped this to go thru several major redos. This will be a nice spot to keep everything in my notes consolidated.

To get the phonemes out of the way:
/m n̼ n ŋ/
/p b̥ t̼ d̼̥ t d̥ k g̥/
/f v̥ θ̼ ð̥̼ s z̥ x/
/r/
/l j w/

The distinction on obstruents is [+/− spread glottis].

/ɪ i͡ɪ i͡ːɪ ʊ u͡ʊ u͡ːʊ/
/ɛ e͡ɛ e͡ːɛ ə əː ɔ o͡ɔ o͡ːɔ/
/æ æː ɒ ɒː/
/a͡ɪ a͡ɪː a͡ʊ a͡ʊː/

More later detailing specific realizations and romanization. I'm not going to cite minimal pairs for each phoneme.

Words added today:
t̼æx n. house; home; building
lɪn n. old man
nəːn n. old woman
g̥aut n. pillow; cushion
slæː adj. rare (uncommon); scarce

not bad (:

Speaking of the V2 structure, what is exactuly the word order rule?
I prefer to not be referred to with masculine pronouns and nouns such as “he/him/his”.

Did you mention how you came up with the name?

In my conlangs, a Sprachbund-thing is to classify insects by the kinds of wings they have (in a loosey-goosey, 'pachyderm' phenotypic sort of way)

E.g.

Cross-wings: Dragonflies, darners

Shield-wings: beetles, roaches, bugs (i.e. stinkbugs, assasin-bugs, etc)

Net-wings: Lacewings, caddisflies, ant-lions, ants, wasps, bees, flies, mosquitoes, damselflies, (and, depending on who you talk to on Tirga, dragonflies, darners)

Maybe the original SlideWings are some other kind of insect?
Or a type of plane?

Or whatevs.
Just wondering.

It's just an interim goofy name helped for inclusion by including a random bodypart.

Not necessarily goofy.

It also made me think of fightercraft like the F-111.
They'd certainly count as slidewings.

Ugh. Have to shovel snow.

So on to independent pronouns.

Independent pronouns exist for first, second and third persons (distinct from demonstratives). There is a lack of marking for case and notably number. What is marked includes gender for all three persons: masculine and feminine for all three, neuter also for third. All such marking is suppletive. Also marked is politeness for 2nd person with three degrees with some suppletion.

1st masculine, feminine:
ʊr, tɪr

2nd masculine, feminine informal:
ne͡ɛm, nəːs
~ formal:
g̥ɪrə, sɪrə
~ uberformal:
g̥ɪrpɪm, sɪrpɪm

3rd masculine, feminine, neuter:
rɪn, sɪn, wæð̥̼

rɪn and sɪn are lexicalized contractions of nouns and an old demonstrative. *kʊr-wɪn > *'rwɪn > rɪn, *ɔs-wɪn > *'swɪn > *sɪn. Relics of *wɪn show up in a few other places.
wæð̥̼ is an original 3rd person which narrowed in scope.

Other pronouns later. Just wanting to solidify some forms for now. Might add clitic versions.

Vocab to catch up:
p-ræːm v.i. sleep
p-rɒːg̥ v.t. see; look at; watch; observe
p-ko͡ɔs v.t. drink
pə-b̥əŋk v.t. punch
pə-b̥u͡ʊz̥ə v.t. kick
