Language evolution simulator

Post by Eritzap »

Greetings everyone,
Recently I've been trying to work on a language evolution simulation program, and I've been considering what sounds to include in it.
For my sanity, I've tried to find a balance between completeness and size. I came with an inventory to work with, and I'd like feedback.
Is this still containing sounds too niche? Or is it lacking sounds that would be useful to simulate phonetic mutations?

I don't know if you did it on purpose, but you lack implosives.
Wipe the glass. This is the usual way to start, even in the days, day and night, only a happy one.

I would consider to, instead of having a list of sounds, to instead have each sound be represented by a selection of choices. E.g. instead of [p] have [bilabial],[pulmonic[stop],[tenuis]]

+1
Doing this in terms of feature geometry gives you more flexibility, as sound change often happens in terms of individual features spreading from one segment to another. This isn't exactly clear-cut, but I think it has definite advantages over monolithic, isolated segments. IIRC, someone here was thinking of doing something like this to a sound change applier they were writing.

That being said, phoneme change happens both based on phonetic structures (gd_h\ may be the realization of gt) and phonemic structures (all gC clusters may pattern a similar way) in a language. An optimal phoneme changer is language specific.

I considered implosive being classified same as ejectives, mostly for simplification of the process.

That the plan I had, what I wrote in my message was the possible combinations, so that I new what "choices" I go by.
