Lextreme2018

Post by bbbourq »

As masako had mentioned in the Lexember thread, myself and the creator of Kardak have started the #Lextreme2018 challenge on Twitter. There is but one rule:
  • Create one word each day in 2018 without derivations nor compounds.
Of course, one does not have to stop there. You can move on to create derivations based on the word created if you have the time and the ambition.

There are other challenges for certain months (e.g. Grammuary, Verbruary, et al), so you can decide if you want to create a word for both Lextreme2018 and whichever challenge exists for the month.

And I was the one who suggested to start a thread for it here because I don't use twitter for conlanging. I'm going to try and participate - a few hundred new words for Nakarian can't hurt. It would be nice if somebody joined me here.

So, without further ado:

Lextreme2018 Jan 1-4 - Nakarian

I'll start with the words from the Dolgopolsky list that I still don't have:

ô - two, pair
ba - who/what (this root combines with noun class affixes)
θạ̀ạ /θəː˩˨/ - tongue (from proto-Nakarian * ɖeʂ)
tôbbô - hearth (from proto-Nakarian ideophone *tuk-puk)

And thank you for recommending the Topic!

Nakarian - Jan 5th

tsẹ (*ậ-t͜sẹ) - singular "you" - male
tsẹ (*ệ-t͜sẹ) - singular "you" - female

This means that there is a difference in gender only when "you" is compounded with something else, and the elided vowel resurfaces, e.g.:

â+tsẹ = âậtsẹ if male but âệtsẹ if female. (The role of â is still not 100% decided. It will be a complementizer, a topical marker or something of the sort.)

Im interested in posting when I can, but Im not sure I understand ... when you say that there should be no derivation and no compounding, by that you mean, not from existing words in the lexicon? I find the task of combining existing words to make new ones to be the most challenging form of word building, and a lot of my etymologies are quite long.

However, its more challenging when it's derivation and compounding from words in the parent language than from words in the target language because of changes in meaning and sound that need to be accounted for, as well as worrying about colliding with other words along the way. So by derivation and compounding, did you mean to include diachronic derivation too, or just derivation from existing words in the target language? I do a lot of both, and in some cases there's no clear line between the two, since diachronic processes have become molded into the morphology of the language, but ...

With diachronic evolution I can add:

:con: Pabappa:

potibla "sword", from Bābākiam 'ŋup taep ūaa šaya ya, "handheld stick by which one presses into the heart".
Kavunupupis, šiŋuputata.
When I see you pointing at me, I know I'm in trouble. (Play)

TBH, I ignore this rule as evidenced by my entry from yesterday. I find coining any word challenging enough.

Nakarian - Jan 11

bahar - (male) god
-bar - a Class 8 suffix used for male deities
Spoiler:
I was just reading on the religion of Carthage and decided to add a little easter egg to Nakarian so I made it so that the proto-Nakarian word for god was "baal" and derived the forms above from that. BTW, since the inhabitants of this planet ultimately come from the Earth, it is not entirely unthinkable that this word ultimately stems from our "Baal". Some of them might have been Bible readers, after all.
