Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
Slightly negative VOT means that the voicing starts within the closure of the stop. This is sometimes called partially voiced, but this has a slightly different meaning for other sounds, so I didn't use it. I thought this might reduce the relase, because the release is often augmented by the beginning of the voicing of the vowel (which can also be delayed).
Concerning Javanese. I find it really difficult to get to the original descriptive sources and some of the newer sources just cite the older sources. If anyone of you has access to Dudas (1976), I would be very happy to get a PM.

Not everyone! I find Des' phonologies to be wonderful and, how shall I put this, "different" in their composition to many others.opipik wrote:Then we would object.

/i e a o/
/iː eː aː yː øː uː oː ɑː/
Syllable structure is (C)(C)V(C). Vowel-initial syllables only occur word-initially. Onset clusters consist of obstruent + r and s [s~z] + stop. /sr/ is realised as [ʃɾ]. Only voiceless obstruents and nasals may occur in the coda.
The long vowels are only found in the initial syllables of roots: this is also the main stress location.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
I was thinking about a (baroque) conlang where there are some morphophonological processes and for each morphophonological process there are three sets of morphemes, triggering morphemes, blocking morphemes and neutral morhemes. A morphophpnological process only occurs if there is at least one triggering morpheme and no blocking morpheme in the word.
Morphophonological process come in three types: local, global and basic. Basic morphophonological processes only affect the root/stem. Local processes affect only the preceding morpheme (succeding if the trigger is a prefix) and global processes apply to the whole word.
Here is an example:
Suppose there are three morphophonological processes: vowel raising (VR, local), nasalization (N, global) and stop lenition (SL, basic).
And there are eight affixes: -an, ber-, ent-, -o, o- om-, -te, kan- and me-
There are three partitions in total, one for each process. The format given here is process, trigger, blocker, neutral
VR: ber- om- me-, -kan, o-, -o, -ent, te-
N: an- -te, om, o-, -o, ber-, ent-, kan-, me-
SL: ent- kan-, -te me-, o-, -o, -an, ber-, om-
There is one stem: -por-
Of course you can have examples for each process being triggered:
Vowel raising:
//ber-o-por-o// -> /beruporo/
Nasalization:
//o-por-an// -> /õpõnãn/
Stop Lenition:
//ent-o-por-o// -> /entoforo/
But processes can also be blocked
No Vowel raising:
//ber-o-por-o-kan// -> /beroforo/
What do you think? Would this be baroque enough?

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
A phoneme inventory for a new conlang of mine, Óorpakwiangkwin
/n ŋ ŋ͡g/
/p b k g/
/t͡s d͡z/
/w ɹ j ħ h/
/ⱱ ɾ/
/i/
/ə ɤ/
/a ɑ/
Vowels are rounded if they come after w or ⱱ.
This is one of my first phoneme inventory's that does not have at least 7 vowels

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
Thank you, Frislander. It's very nice of you to say so.Frislander wrote:I find Des' phonologies to be wonderful and, how shall I put this, "different" in their composition to many others.
(And I've long suspected that we share a similar taste in language aesthetics.)
"New" Ałýýla now looks like this:
/m n/ m n
/p t s ɬ k/ p t s ł k
/h/ h
/v l j/ v l j
/a ɛ ɪ ɔ ʊ ɜ ʏ/ a e i o u ɜ y
Vowels can be long or short. Any vowel can form a diphthong with /ɪ/, but /o u/ front if followed by /ɪ/, resulting in the following four diphthongs: /aɪ̯ ɛɪ̯ ɜɪ̯ ʏɪ̯/ ai ei ɜi yi. I'm undecided as to whether other diphthongs occur.
/h/ only occurs in coda (and possibly word-initially).
The following geminate consonants and consonant clusters are permitted:
Code: Select all
m n p t s ł k v
ː - nn - tt ss - - vv
h hm hn hp ht hs hł hk hv
v vm vn vp vt vs vł vk vv
l - - lp lt - - lk -

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
It isn't too bad. It is a little odd having /e/ instead of /i/ and having only one voiced fricative but to me it is passable. I would expect a second voiced fricative or no voiced fricative phoneme. Finnish however has only one voiced stop/fricative so stuff like that could happen.Parlox wrote:Is this Naturalistic?

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
None I'm afraid. The phonology was actually inspired by the username qwedzal that he often uses in the CBB IRC channel. I probably should have mentioned that.Creyeditor wrote:Which sound is written as 1 and which as 7?

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
So, /qʷed.zal/, right? Also, maybe <7> /ʔ/ and <1>/ɨ/, then it could be < qwed117>/qʷe.dɨʔː/.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
I'm thinking of stripping Sōkoan right down to this (relatively) simple phonology:
/m n (ŋ)/ m n ġ
/p t t͡s t͡ʂ k/ p t c ċ k
/b d d͡z d͡ʐ g/ b d z ż g
/ɸ s ʂ x~h/ f s ṡ h
/β~β̞ ɾ ɣ~ɰ/ v r ġ
/o ɑ a ɛ e/ o ă a ĕ e
/u ɯ ɨ i/ u ŭ ĭ ı
I do miss the emphatic affricates a bit, especially things like ċċṡ, so I wouldn't be surprised if they make a comeback at some point.
