I have written a LaTeX package that lets me input PIE stuff in ascii and convert it into PIE orthography, complete with specification for alternatives such as using a circumflex instead of acute or i/u with acute below instead of y/w.

Let me tell you one thing: TeX is a horrible language to code in.
At kveldi skal dag lęyfa,
Konu es bręnnd es,
Mæki es ręyndr es,
Męy es gefin es,
Ís es yfir kømr,
Ǫl es drukkit es.

I translated a poem of Victor Hugo : "My two daughters".
It was quiet difficult and took me almost an hour, but I'm proud of my work. ~

@Ahzoh

I think you copypasta'd some kind of polearm instead of a shield, there.
[:x]

cannot wait to see it.

Well, I was looking for an Akkadian (cuneiform) cognate to Syriac ܐܫܝܬܐ
Arabic آسِيَة and Hebrew אָשְׁיָה

and, well, I stumbled upon this ring. But it's not just any ring, it's quite special:

You're supposed to scroll right on the image, it's at the very end. Conversely, one could rightclick "view image".

I think the shield is reminiscent of those Zulu shields and has a nice metal-and-wood tortoise-shell pattern, with the edge reinforced with hide.

Happy-happy-joy-joy!

Discovered the felicity of library tape today! Tears like silk tape, doesn't bunch and stick in a wad like duct tape, makes broken book spines almost as good as new again! Woohoo!

Yep. Doesn't take much...

I wonder if there are languages where ring the jewelry is a different word than ring the shape.

I also translated the ring verse:
http://conworkshop.info/translation.php ... 9840&l=YVU

I deem that one Sedu's two moons, Šuṟdi, will have a ring around it approximately 5955km from it

Šuṟdi is also the size of 0.342 earths with a density 3.19g/cm^3.

Mandarin is one, 戒指 is ring (on finger), 圆(形) is ring (shape).

All the Romance languages I know. French bague and Italian anello are always the jewellery, never the shape as far as I'm aware. Perhaps the question should be whether any non-Germanic languages exhibit this polysemy?

Polish kinda does.

"Pierścień" means both the jewellery and the shape ("pierścień ognia" = "a ring of fire"). There is also "(o)krąg", however, which only means the shape.

Spanish is like Polish, except opposite. Anill@ means both jewelry and shape, while sortija means only jewelry.

Alright, that does it!

Gotta learn me some Sumerian and Akkadian!

It's not like the Sumerian-analog isn't a key classical language among Men in The World, doncha know! And Akkadian still finds its uses as well (religious, mostly).

My latest ideas for Sōkoan vowel harmony:

The inventory is as follows:

/o ɑ a ɛ e/ o ă a ĕ e
/u ɯ ɨ i/ u ŭ ĭ ı

- High-vowel harmony distinguishes four degrees of backness. Any morpheme with the archiphonemic vowel I has this assimilate in backness to one of u ŭ ĭ ı. As an example, the suffix /iri/ has four allomorphs: -ırı -ĭrĭ -ŭrŭ -uru
- Low-vowel harmony only affects the vowels ă ĕ which are realisations of the archiphoneme Æ; as an example, the suffix /gæ/ has two allomorphs -gă -gĕ
- Suffixes with the vowels o a e eı can be added to words irrespective of vowel harmony

Here, have a table:

Code: Select all

← back front →
o ɑ a ɛ e
u ɯ ɨ i
And, as a bonus, a more schematic representation of the vowel space:

Code: Select all

← front back →
i ɨ ɯ u
  e o
     ɛ
         a ɑ

The New Sōkoan might look sth like this:

eıttłăghărtŭnŭmŭŭgo

So that's an achievement then. Much breve. Many vowel harmony.

Nice! I'm working on similar for mine, though I keep getting distracted with other things. Did you just do all the math by hand, or by spreadsheet, or does CWS have useful tools for this sort of thing?

I did by the glorious calculators on the internet. There is a third law of kepler calc for calculating time it takes to revolve around an object, one for finding tidal forces, and some others.
