It's way better with numerals, don't you think? [;)]

Aren't "very" and "too" intensifiers?
Don't you call "himself" and "yourself" and "myself" and "herself" and so on, "emphatic pronouns", rather than "intensifiers"?

I thought an "intensifier" was a kind of adverb that could apply not only to other adverbs but also to adjectives.

Himself, herself (emphatic pronouns)

Post by Xing »

I stole the terminology from WALS.

Edit: I just saw that Wikipedia calls them "intensive pronouns".

Well, they're obviously wrong, since that terminology confuses me!
[;)] (btw; that's a joke.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intensifier matches what I am used to.

So do http://www.sil.org/linguistics/Glossary ... ronoun.htm and http://www.jstor.org/pss/40159938, and other links I found at http://www.dogpile.com/info.dogpl/searc ... %20pronoun and http://www.dogpile.com/info.dogpl/searc ... ntensifier.

I do not find any use of "intensifier" to mean "emphatic pronoun" except in WALS.info chapter 47. Technically that doesn't mean they're wrong, it only explains why I was surprised.
It also seems to be a not-very-widespread use of "intensifiere".
That probably means that changing your thread-title to "emphatic pronouns" would be a good idea, or, maybe, "Emphatic Pronouns and Intensifiers".
Or, maybe it wouldn't be worth the trouble; you decide.

:con: Zidhgebzhail - Which lacks reflexive personal pronouns, but can use suffixaufnahme or verbal suffixes for the same effect:

Peter washed himself:

Pieter gUshpin-ud
Pieter-Ø g-Ushpi-n-ud
Peter-ABS.SG.M PST-wash-SIMPLE-REFLEXIVE
Peter washed-self.

Pieteril vilef gUshpin
Pieter-il v-il-ef g-Ushpi-n
Peter-ERG.SG.M 1-ERG-ACC.SG.M PST-wash-SIMPLE
*Peter he-him washed. Although grammatical, I think this would sound odd to a hypothetical native-speaker.

Peter washed the car himself: - Two possible interpretations, the second of which has two likely forms:

1 - Pieteril grraimpef bouvuif gUshpin
Pieter-il grraimp-ef bouv-uif g-Ushpi-n
Peter-ERG.SG.M car-ACC.SG.M self-ADV.M PST-wash-SIMPLE
Peter washed car 'selfly' (personally).

2A - Pieteril grraimpef zoeduif gUshpin
Pieter-il grraimp-ef z-oed-uif g-Ushpi-n
Peter-ERG.SG.M car-ACC.SG.M ANIMATE-one-ADV.M PST-wash-SIMPLE
Peter washed car alone.

2B - Pieteril v[il]eung grraimpef gUshpin
Pieter-il v-[il]-eung grraimp-ef g-Ushpi-n
Peter-ERG.SG.M 1-[ERG]-COMITATIVE.SG.M car-ACC.SG.M PST-wash-SIMPLE
Peter washed car with himself (alone).

In example 2B, 'vileung' exhibits suffixaufnahme, with both an ergative inflection to match with Peter, and a comitative inflection. The ergative inflection could be dropped, but would result in some ambiguity (as the clause could then mean that Peter washed the car with some other, thus far undefined, man).

:tan: Swahili

Peter alioga.
Peter a-li-og-a
Peter(1) 1-PST-wash.own.body-Ø

Peter washed himself/showered/bathed.

Peter ali(li)osha gari mwenyewe.
Peter a-li-(li)-osh-a gari mw-enyewe
Peter(1) 1-PST-(5)-wash(TR)-Ø car(5) 1-self

Peter washed the car himself.

Swahili indicates reflexive action with the prefix -ji- in the object slot of the verb, but it doesn't apply to this example because the verb for washing oneself is intransitive. (You could theoretically say alijiosha, but that seems to be very unidiomatic as it only gets three Google hits.) There is also a word (kunawa) for washing a part of one's body and that is either intransitive or takes the body part as the object.
Glossing Abbreviations: COMP = comparative, C = complementiser, ACS / ICS = accessible / inaccessible, GDV = gerundive, SPEC / NSPC = specific / non-specific, AG = agent, E = entity (person, animal, thing)
