Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs
Does the <í> derive from a PG diphthong or a short vowel that has lengthened?
Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs
Was that short vowel *i?
Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs
Barbed hedgehog? Which could just be an alternative name for a hedgehog or could mean porcupine, I'm guessing.
Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs
I'm tempted to give it to you, since the literal translation I had in mind was "spiny hedgehog" (not to imply hedgehogs don't have their own spines to begin with), and it does refer to an animal that resembles a hedgehog, at least superficially (although not a porcupine).
However, I want to see if you can guess the particular animal, or type of animal, I had in mind. As a hint, this word would have been coined within the past few centuries.

So, I'm guessing that means it's a new world animal. I had to do some searching but I'm gonna guessing it means echidna?shimobaatar wrote: ↑17 Nov 2018 20:32I'm tempted to give it to you, since the literal translation I had in mind was "spiny hedgehog" (not to imply hedgehogs don't have their own spines to begin with), and it does refer to an animal that resembles a hedgehog, at least superficially (although not a porcupine).

Oh, I like the sound of that. My first instinct is that it sounds like a demonym, "Abskachan" or something.
Is it a verb?
