Forum News discussion/feedback thread

What can I say? It doesn't fit above, put it here. Also the location of board rules/info.

I didn't think of that!

We must run this idea past the Almighty Aszev...

EDIT:
Does Taptalk only support Android and iOS?
Oh, I found a blackberry version.

Most of the comments in the BlackBerry App Store say that it is quite a glitchy app.
Also, it is paid so that's a nuisance - especially for something that apparently doesn't work so well.

Also, back to the style idea, there is already this style:
http://www.artodia.com/phpbb-styles/mobile/
I installed it on my test forum and it seems to work perfectly on my phone at least.

Regarding the rank system: For certain ranks I think it would be nice to list why people were granted those ranks. Metal/Puremetal, for example - when I see that someone has that rank I'm often curious what their contribution to the board was. Similarly I wonder what languages someone with Light is fluent in, and what guide someone with Wood/Water wrote.

Is this already announced somewhere? If not, could it be?

There is no record that I know of.

But why don't you just ask people? I'm sure most are happy to share.
Some ranks are harder to pinpoint than others. Whereas others are fairly easy to find. (Like the guides - Just look in the Teach & Share forum for threads with the person as author.)

For me, viewing the site on my phone is fine. The only request I might have if a mobile version does appear is that the text be bigger. As it is I either have to squint and hold it close to my face or zoom in and be constantly scrolling.

There could be an accomplishment/group membership of giving constructive feedback on others' conlangs.
The feedback should be about the structure of the language NOT THE DESCRIPTION 'use IPA' 'that is not how term gerund is used' etc. but questions or suggestions on the language.

No worries. If you have someone in mind for the rank you can nominate them by PMing me.
This is true for all ranks/banners.

You can PM Aszev or the other mods too. But I'm probably the one who is here most often.

Please don't repost the links to the spambots' websites... We're removing the bots and their posts as soon as we possibly are able to.

Hey, I can't find that old thread where we submit flag icons, but I decided to make a couple (after finding a need for them in another thread):

Can we make necromancy (other than exceptional contributions to the thread's topic) officially considered "spam"? It's a common part of the rules of forums all over the place. However, it's not mentioned at all in the rules here and some users seem to think it is a reasonable thing to do.

It's a fair suggestion, though I'd first like to see a common discussion on what the board members think of it. Apart from strictly forbidding necromancing, there are also forums where adding related content to old quiet threads is strongly preferred to creating new duplicate ones. Also "exceptional contributions" can become a thorny issue if not properly defined.

I definitely prefer having content posts about a single subject to be concentrated in a few places even when there are long gaps between the posts. Such posts should of course stay on the subject of the old thread. Plain socialising shouldn't need resurrecting old threads. I'd suggest to draw the line between "exceptional contributions" and "social banter" according to what subjects are considered key topics of the forum.

Then what about the time limits of acceptable and non-acceptable necromancy?

It surprises me that there's no mention of it at all. I'll look into it.

That said, the official stance is not that thread necromancy is okay. We've told people off before for it, but generally it's been minor occurrences, which is probably why no one took the effort to spell it out in the rules [:)]
Edit: I agree with gach's point above.

When the thread is under a year old, I see no problem.

Before I joined this forum, I'd never really frequented any discussion forums before, so this maybe a stupid question, but why is necromancy considered so bad if the comment is relevant to the thread topic? Personally, I've discovered some nice threads precisely because they were necroed, as it saved me having to trawl through 40 pages of forum threads. I reiterate that I'm no forum veteran and therefore am completely ignorant of the arguments for and against. Just curious. [:)]
