After several years, I rewatched the movie Matango (Attack of the Mushroom People). My Japanese ability is better than it was the last time I saw it, so I understood it a lot better now and found it more interesting than I did before. In the English speaking world, Toho movies have a strong reputation for being corny and campy, but I think a big reason for this is the outdated special effects and untalented dubbing. Of course there are completely terrible movies like Godzilla's Revenge and Godzilla vs. Megalon, but Matango is mainly about human relations rather than special effects and giant monsters. It's not a perfect movie, but for a 1960s Toho film of this type, it's quite good. I recommend if it you don't watch it dubbed.

Actually, there's something I don't like about many Japanese movies and TV dramas. It has to do with comedies. Humans tell jokes by nature, so no matter how serious a movie is, I don't mind a little comedy. But the comic relief character in Japanese movies always seems to be from the wrong genre. It's like they pulled a character out of a comedy movie and just dropped them in the movie. I hate it, because it always immediately destroys my sense of immersion. Of course not all movies are like this, but it's a common pattern.

No me gusta verlas en la tele porque anuncios. Yo sé que hay canales que no mostran anuncios durante la película, pero yo preferiría usar mi reproductor de medios digitales. I don't like watching them on TV because ads. I know some channels don't show ads during the movie, but I'd rather use my digital media player.

J'oublie toujours mes films préférés. J'aime bien le film Maniac parce que c'est très perturbant. J'aime aussi Bons Baisers de Bruges et L'Irlandais car le comédie est très noir. J'aime aussi Intouchables qui est très émouvant. Je vais en écrire des autres si je m'en souviens.
I always forget my favourite films. I love Maniac because it's really unsettling. I love In Bruges and The Guard because of the black comedy. I also love The Intouchables which is really moving. I'll post more if I remember any.

Pour être honnête, les traductions marrantes existent aussi en anglais. Le film "Les Saveurs du palais" s'appelle "Haute Cuisine" en anglais.
To be fair, the funny translations go both ways. The film "Les Saveurs du palais" (The Flavors of the [Presidential] Palace) is called "Haute Cuisine" in English.
Mais il faut aussi considérer que parfois une traduction fidèle ne donnera pas l'impression désirée aux spectateurs.
But one should also consider that sometimes a faithful translation won't give audiences the right impression.
Si un Français entend "Les Saveurs du palais", il est possible que ça lui évoque le Palais de l'Élysée. Pourtant, les anglophones ne savent pas en général où habite le président de la République. "Haute Cuisine" communique les informations qui, pour eux, seraient les plus utiles: C'est un film français qui traite de la cuisine.
If a French person hears "Les Saveurs du palais", it's possible that will make them think of the Elysee Palace. But Anglophones generally don't know where the French president lives. "Haute Cuisine" communicates the information that, for them, would be the most useful: It's a French movie about food.
