~ CBB CONLANGER SURVEY ~

What can I say? It doesn't fit above, put it here. Also the location of board rules/info.

~ CBB CONLANGER SURVEY ~

Post by Arayaz »

I have made a survey for the people of the forum, inspired by the You thread in the Everything Else forum. This is more to get a sense of the forum's demographics / some other bits, not to learn more about you as an individual; therefore the name is optional.

P.S. I really liked the way you included a Khemehekis Conlanger Taxonomy type question (even though it doesn't include the exact same categories).

I filled it out, but I could have used an additional answer to the "What kind of conlanger are you?" question: "The kind who spends all their time creating tools to make conlanging easier, and ends up not conlanging as a result."

In the broader sense of "tool", there's some unreleased and unfinished stuff, but two ongoing examples are threads here on the CBB:
Natural Sign Languages - Share, Discuss, Ask
Conlangery Podcast - All episodes grouped by topic

In the narrow sense of "tool", I only have one project and it's unreleased. It's an app intended as a collection of utilities mostly geared towards diachronic conlanging. Among other features (most of which are still merely planned), it allows words, sound changes, etc... to have any number of separate phonological layers, each of which can use a separate transcription system. This would make it easier to use non-linear transcription systems and to apply changes to multi-modal languages (e.g. a conlang that combines signs and speech) or to languages that have a lot of overlapping elements (e.g. sign languages). Here's a screenshot of the current prototype, you can get a better view with a right click and the "Open Image in new tab" option:

Did you ever get enough responses to figure out the results?

Post by Arayaz »

Eh, kind of; there were 11.

- 6 out of 11 were loyalists (only one or two languages)
- 6 out of 11 had standards that improved faster than they can finish a language, so they always only have one or two, or even zero, languages they're satisfied with and all the previous ones seem bad now
- 4 out of 11 make dozens of sketches before settling on anything
- 3 out of 11 were fillers
- 1 out of 11 made huge language families
- 1 out of 11 made loglangs
───────────────────────────────

- 1 out of 11 spoke Polish fluently
───────────────────────────────
- 8 out of 11 spoke English conversationally (there are certainly a lot of people who said that they spoke English both fluently and conversationally, so I'm not quite sure what to do with this)

Collectively, the 11 conlangers who answered own 7 dogs and 5 cats.
────────────────────────────────
1/11 is below 13

I'm curious to know who is learning Middle English – I have two books on that topic which might help.
Also, I put my data in.
Languages of Rodentèrra: Buonavallese, Saselvan Argemontese; Wīlandisċ Taulkeisch; More on the road.
Conlang embryo of TELES: Proto-Avesto-Umbric ~> Proto-Umbric
