I don't mean to ignore the rest of your post (I'm a bit short on time atm!), but is there a reason you prefer one over the other?

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
XIPA uses less resources because JEPAX runs the x2i() function every time you type a letter, and sometimes I'm on a computer with pretty low resources so typing on JEPAX can be annoying. Actually, you just made me realize that it's mostly just habit now, since I'm not on a low-resource computer as often as I used to... There's also an element of too much stupidity, because I could've easily translated x2i() into a silly little local program in Python or whatever, but the idea literally did not occur to me until now, lol, I just kept using your XIPA page...

Congrats on the promotion! Thanks for your efforts

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
I only just spotted the promotion as well. Does it count as a promotion when your job title changes to recognise the work you're already doing? I don't know, but much congratulations either way!
Also, nice change to the Boards logo Subtle, but nice.

You can tell the same lie a thousand times,
But it never gets any more true,
So close your eyes once more and once more believe
That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.

Maybe someone should notify the LCS that we've moved. Their page still links to the old site. On the other hand, half the links on the LCS website are broken, so...

I just want to [+1] and say thanks to Ossicone (Ossigod? Godicone?) for restoring the old stuff. [:D]
But the smilies aren’t working?

Not everything returned. There was a particular game thread- similar to the diachronic challenge thread- that I now realized was unfortunately pruned into oblivion. This one for exampleDesEsseintes wrote: ↑25 Apr 2020 06:01 I just want to [+1] and say thanks to Ossicone (Ossigod? Godicone?) for restoring the old stuff. [:D]

will return a dead link. Alas, I had some great insights, and it was really cool looking at the maps and what not in retrospect. I remember, if I remember correctly, Adarain making a neat one where the primary feature was movement through a mountain valley.
But oh well, time gives and time takes. It was a necessary loss, and so

Unfortunately, in order to make sure the majority of posts can remain up some had to be sacrificed.qwed117 wrote: ↑25 Apr 2020 06:13 Not everything returned. Unless you want to pay for dedicated server hosting, in which case I can restore all of the posts.
The post counts have been resynchronized.KaiTheHomoSapien wrote: ↑25 Apr 2020 07:13 Whoa, looks like some post-counts are down. And the smilies aren't working. :(
I also updated the forums to the latest version of phpbb which has caused the smilies to stop working. It is a known issue and is due to be fixed in their next release.
Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
Out of curiosity, what functionality, if any, has changed? What can we now do in posts that we couldn't before?

Wait, all the non-English stuff has just been deleted!?

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
The main issue with the non-English section was that hardly anybody used it. During the past six months only two threads had got any new posts at all. Another problem was that it wasn't being used for its intended purpose, leading to most topics having few posts with little content, and a large portion of them being in English. Of course, the intended purpose was perhaps a bit counterintuitive.
In any case, the plan is to have the spirit of the Other Languages forum come back in a new shape, that hopefully will be a better fit with the board as a whole.
Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
I can appreciate that in an abstract sense.
But sudden mass deletion of people's posts is a little unfair, don't you think?

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
Yes, that is true, but I did not delete the forum into the void! I archived all the threads, and am currently sorting through them, since many of the threads can be relabeled and put back in the new Language Learning & Non-English forum, that I've just set up.
Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
I think it would be good to elaborate on the purpose of personal threads. Did you grab that idea from the UniLang forum? At UniLang, there is a difference between personal threads and conversation threads, but it isn't clear to me whether you're replicating that here...• Personal threads for practicing a certain language.
→ Threads should be titled <[Username] – [Language]>; e.g. Aszev – Français.
• Question threads for a specific language.
→ Threads should be titled <[Language] Question Thread: Questions about [Language]>, where the second part is in the language in question (but this can be added later if the thread starter is unfamiliar with the language); e.g. French Question Thread: Questions sur le français.
• Conversation threads in a specific language. In these threads, English should be avoided.
→ General conversation threads should be titled <[Language] Conversation Thread | [Language] Conversation Thread>, where the first part is in the language in question.
→ Threads with specific topics should be tagged with the name of the language used in brackets before the actual title; e.g. [Français] Thread title
At UniLang personal threads, people post questions they have about the L2 (in the L2 or English) to get answers/opinions, and also journal-like entries of one-three paragraphs for which they welcome corrections (including thorough/detailed corrections if someone has the patience for that). The advantage of allowing people to post questions in these threads is that they can get answers/opinions in English, and also some people just feel more comfortable asking them here than in general question threads.
Meanwhile, in conversation threads, people only speak in the L2, generally about any topic (including, sometimes, people's questions about the L2 or observations people of make about grammar/vocabulary they see in chats/newspapers/etc, and such metalinguistic things). In those threads, corrections are usually kept low. Also, conversation threads usually have lower activity than personal threads and general question threads (not sure why, maybe some strange things about comfortable feelings again).
I'm just asking about clarifications. I think it's an interesting idea to have a section for language learning.
That said, I've noticed conlangers in general tend to not actually learn languages much, probably because general typology is much more important for the hobby than depth in one language or a few languages. I sometimes feel like a bit of a stranger in conlanging chatrooms or such groups because I actually try to learn various of the languages I give examples about... There's a thread on the ZBB for practising languages, and at any given time it is usually the same relatively few people that participate.
