Is there a concept of monsters? What about coming up with a word like "fourleg" or something? To someone who only knows birdish things, a mammal would basically be a really exotic monster.Creyeditor wrote:Yesterday I was thinking really hard about what a tiger would be in my conworld, since there are no terrestrial mammals *there*. I was thinking about maybe having something like a 'terror bird' or a 'thunder bird'. Maybe also some 'giant ow'. I really don't know which flightless birds are most similar to tigers.

With your answer you'll find the tiger...

Re: The Tiger
Thank you, both are very interesting ideas. A mythology about four-legged hairy monsters is something I will think about. Also, I will put more thought into the colors of feathers.

Re: The Tiger
There's always PREP (preposition). Simple enough, and you can elaborate elsewhere what it means.Alessio wrote:I really have no idea how to gloss <a>, which in this case is used to introduce a pattern.
Re: The Tiger
I thought it was 'PRP' (gloss-natzying for 3 character transcribents).
The same sentence could be similarly written in
El tigre es anaranjado con rayas negras.
El tigre es anaranjado de rayas negras.
In either case, both would be glossed:
DEF.M.SG tiger.SG be<PRS.3SG> orange.M.SG PRP stripe.PL black.F.PL

Re: The Tiger
I would think that the defining characteristics of a tiger are (1) Stripes and (2) {larger-sized} hunter/predator.Creyeditor wrote:Thank you, both are very interesting ideas. Many creatures in that respect could be considered "tigers":
1) Reptomammal à la Gorgonopsid
2) a therapsid carnivore (mebbe Allosaurid)
3) a large salamander
4) a fish
5) A large insect (wasp or dragonfly)
6) some kind of {furry} arachnid (tarantula, solfugid or scorpion, or a variety of extinct eurypterid or Mesothelæ )
For example, in my conworld Tirga, on the Southern peninsula of Ingerstaadt, there lives a large predatory arachnid called a Malmignotta.
It is like a shaggy, small elephant, but it is extremely nimble and can move about the Tulgey Hemlock Jungles hunting with it's Oliphant tusk-like cheliceræ.

A rare albino individual on an immense centuries-old Hemlock tree-stump. The tusks are folded under the furry pedipalps.
They are the trophy-prey of the NaZinji tribes, who are transequatorial representatives of Paranthropus amlas.

Re: The Tiger
It's whatever you want. Maybe my tolerance for four letters is just higher than yours? I regularly use PTCP, DISJ and IPFV (participle, disjunctive, imperfective) in my glosses.Lambuzhao wrote:I thought it was 'PRP' (gloss-natzying for 3 character transcribents).

Hastiti haspiriyat kures svures.

PL-stripe PL-giant.mudskipper-POSSD orange\ADJ black\ADJ
The stripes of giant mudskippers are orange and black.
I found a solution for tigers in my conworld. It's neither terror-birds, not hairy monsters. It's giant mudskippers. It came to my mind, that there are terrestrial fish in my conworld and mudskippers look pretty scary. So, I learned something new. Also the word for 'stripe' is derived from the verb root 'to support'. I thought of 'beam' (one, who supports) > 'strip' as an intermediate step and I quite like that idea. There is no copula for adjectives and I switched around the syntax a bit. Enjoy!
P.S.: I also tried to edit a photo to show what stripes I mean. Didn't succeed though.
