Some sort of Krampus-like figure was what I was thinking as well.
Although, in hindsight, I could also see it meaning "elf", as qwed117 suggested.

Is it like a Christmas bonfire? In Guatemala they burn old trash on Christmas, and call it la quema del diablo ; is it related to that?

Interesting guess, but wrong. It's a more wide-spread tradition, although apparently it doesn't exist in the US.
