Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
Is it specifically gerrymandering?
EDIT: oh, beaten to it. Knew I should have suggested it in my last post...

You can have it! Only 54 minutes difference; just luck in my opinion.

Yes! Something like "the butchering of electoral district boundaries".

I think you deserve it because I wouldn’t have gotten it without shimobataar’s broad hint in reply to your very accurate last guess.Salmoneus wrote: ↑22 Nov 2020 22:09Oh no, you take it. But also; I genuinely am not prepared to take a turn right now.
So I think I’d like you to continue the fun!

Unfortunately I don't have a good word to hand, but I'll rummage something up hopefully relatively soon...

Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
You could pretty much pick any random word in Old Wentish, since the sound changes aren't published.
I did it. I made the world's worst book blog.
Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
Sure, but the sound changes to Old Wenthish are also almost all really obvious, so that most OW words are fairly transparent to speakers of Germanic languages. [some random words: snúta (snout); sittena (sit); meolc (milk); etc]. I want to find something that isn't so immediately obvious, without just being a loanword. It also doesn't help that I'm in the middle of (read: gotten distracted from) updating the existing lexicon.
So I've gone with a modern Wenthish word. It's not a great one, I'm afraid, and it's probably not going to be easy - ideally I'd go with something where you take a while to work it out and then kick yourself afterward, but this isn't one of those, I don't think. Nonetheless, it has a few interesting features, so, why not:
rą́ngongblądha

Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
can it be divided at least into *rą́ngong+*blądha, and is the latter element (in this division, lattermost in some other) derived from either *blandijana or *blandana?

Just to clarify, does <ą> represent something that developed in part from a nasal segment? Also, did the origin of *blądha begin with a *b in Proto-Germanic?

Yes, it can be
Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
I'm afraid not, no. It can sometimes develop from a nasalised vowel or a vowel before a nasal in some circumstances, but neither explains its presence here.
[orthographical tangent: the 'ogonek' here is actually by analogy with the ogoneked forms of <e> and <o>, which, as in Norse, in turn derive from a visual blend of that vowel with <a>. The extended tail was then analogically extended back to <a> itself]
FWIW, the acute accent indicates length, and a-ogonek-acute indicates back /A:/. a-ogonek-in-open-syllable may indicate exactly the same thing, or may indicate /V:/, I'm not sure which yet.
It did, yes. Also, did the origin of *blądha begin with a *b in Proto-Germanic?

Does *blądha originate in *bladą, and if not that then, blauþijaną?
