A lot of your languages seem to have a genitive case? Is that kind of your signature feature as a conlanger? Btw, I would love to see glosses.spanick wrote: ↑27 Nov 2018 17:50 Old Gotski

Re: I am king of kings
Yeah, four of those six have the genitive. Old Gotski, being a relative of Gothic, is highly inflected. Modern Gotski is part of the Balkan Sprachbund and has merged the native into the genitive. Dnukta' and it's daughter Nukka also have it, but I'd chalk that up to lack of creativity on my part than a signature as a conlanger. While Dnukta' is one of my few a priori conlangs, I stuck to a very Indo-European case system. My other a priori languages are less IE, but also less well developed.Creyeditor wrote: ↑01 Dec 2018 11:48 A lot of your languages seem to have a genitive case? There are a bunch of ways it could be said depending on things, but one way I like is:
Taqu nu iuje taqu.
king NOM.1S.ICS GEN.3P.DEF.ACS king
I am king of kings.
Using the inaccessible for the first person nu and the accessible for the third person iuje indicates dominance over everyone: you may not touch me - I may touch the other kings.

Glossing Abbreviations: COMP = comparative, C = complementiser, ACS / ICS = accessible / inaccessible, GDV = gerundive, SPEC / NSPC = specific / non-specific, AG = agent, E = entity (person, animal, thing)

Well, Yitə people (the speakers of Asta, short of yitə yiya), so let's use the an expression "big man", in a verbal context instead for convenience's sake.

Re: I am king of kings
West Saxon
The most literal translation (and the one you'd be most likely to see, given how often it would show up in a place that might demand a more archaic tone), would be
ic bue de kyngne kyng
ɪtʃ bøɥ də kʏŋ.gn̩ kʏŋ
I be-GNOM the king-GEN.PL king
A more colloquial version would make "king" an adjective, and use the absolute superlative form to render something along the lines of "I'm the kingliest of all" or "I'm the most kingly".
ic bue de orkyngliksten
ɪtʃ bøɥ də ɔʁ̞.ˈkʏŋ.ɫɪk.stn̩
I be-GNOM the kingly-SUP-ABS
in both of them, note the use of gnomic "bue" rather than the more typical "jom", which would have a tone more in the vein of "I'm on top of the world!" than what is typically being conveyed by this sentence.

Re: I am king of kings
Updating Silvish. The language often forms genitive constructions using the preposition de, but when the possessor in the construction is definite, noble-gender and non-quantified, the noun appears in the oblique case with no preposition. Roî "king" is noble-gender and meets the other requirements, so it gets the plain oblique.
